I tried, I really tried to like this book but it just goes nowhere. 180 pages in and I felt like I was reading the same thing over and over and finally gave up. I love the writing and the sea was probably my favorite character because the main two were just boring. Also the strange lack of punctuation quotations really made it hard for me to relax and read, I couldn't tell what was spoken or thought.

Obsession in both character and reader. One becomes this story. Lost on the Orkney coast in mist and fog, love strives against the inevitable. A woman showing the reader a woman thru the eyes of a man. Encompassing.
With prose as lush as the bleak landscape they describe, this is a beautifully woven novel about a man in the grips of an obsession, with a woman under a spell of her own...
One of the best books I've read this year. Sackville really nailed this love story/mystery. Brings the Orkneys to life along with her two main characters. A must read.

Just read the first pages and marvel at this writer's gifts as a storyteller. It does not hurt to have been to the Orkneys either
There are places on Earth where the folktale is alive and real—as real as the geologic, the climacteric, the oceanographic—places like Orkney in the evocative language of Amy Sackville in her wonderfull novel, ORKNEY.
“How utterly deep, how impenetrable, how dense the night is here. The wind lashes around us now; it batters at the walls, it wails in the chimney, screeches in the eaves, hammers at the window; it whines and howls out there in the dark and I, in the dark within, listen. The night seems to see in. From the window nothing to be seen, neither sea nor sky, only the sound of the waves crashing, the frenzied wind, the cold glass rattling against the tumult. The fire is flaring, and guttering. It’s late, and she is in the kitchen, she is singing to herself, singing to the sea, her voice as if borne in from the water. I cannot make out the words, half a hum, half a deep, thrumming song, low and sorrowing, an old hymn; drowned almost in the wind, it comes in snatches, plaintive, distant. There must be fishermen, out in the squall furling and thickening around them, struggling to find their way home; it is a voice to be wrecked on the rocks for. A voice to be charmed to sleep by, a faery’s song, to bring fierce sweet dreams I would not choose to wake from. I miss her terribly, here in my circle of firelight, with her so near to me and out of reach...”The novel is the tale of this narrator and his unnamed heroine, his young wife who asked to be taken North on their honeymoon, a young woman with green eyelids, white hair, alabaster limbs, and a compulsion to submerge herself in deep currents and it is a wondrous trip asking many questions which can mostly be answered by the haunting experience wrought by this author.
This is a beautifully written book...in fact, Sackville's incredible writing often distracted me away from the slow moving plot. I guess this was a good thing. But something can be said for beautiful writing mixed with a well developed and compelling plot. Still, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it especially to readers who treasure words that express complex feelings.
I have a huge crush on Scotland and the Scottish Isles. I have in fact lived in Scotland for about half a year. The people are kind, fun loving, endearing and a real joy to be around. The countryside is absolutely breathtaking. So I feel bad saying I never felt I could enter the flow of this story. The language is the story's main redeeming feature. The relationship, the centerpiece of the story never worked for me because it seemed so bloody unlikely. I felt the professor was just a ridiculous git. Then I wondered if the young woman's intentions were never really focused on the professor but only saw him as a conduit. When I reached the story's conclusion I had no idea what happened. It was as if there was a plot within the plot and the inner structure became invisible to me.

I read a lot of books and I am rarely disappointed in what I've selected and purchased. I research reviews pretty carefully and I follow reviewers whose likes and interests are compatible with my own. I am confident Amy Sackville is an accomplished author. She possesses a blue chip education and obvious, bountiful writing talents. Her debut novel, 'The Still Point,' won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize. 'Still Point' was also nominated for an Orange Fiction Award. That most definitely doesn't happen by accident. So maybe I am where the problem lies.

Having written what I wouldn't consider to be a praiseworthy review, I believe I'll have to reread the novel and follow this up with some additional comments. There are few things I enjoy more than reading. I consider it a true and precious gift.
